What Is The History Of Yoga?

The origin of yoga is covered by the mists of time. The ancient wisdom known as “the best science of life” is believed to have been revealed to great sages of India several thousand years ago.

Yoga is an ancient system of physical as well as metal practices that originated during the Indus Valley civilization in South Asia. The primary purpose of yoga is to promote harmony in the body, mind & environment.

Yoga refers to the complete system of physical, mental, social, and spiritual development. For generations, this philosophy was passed on from the master instructor to the student. The first written records of the practice of yoga appeared about 200 BC in Yogasutra of Patanjali. The program consisted of an eight-fold path or Asthangayoga.

In the West, a number of schools of yoga are admired & use some or all of the Asthangayoga described by Patanjali. The 8 limbs are as follows:

#1: YAMA: rules for living a successful life in the society

#2: NIYAMA: techniques for managing & purifying self

#3: ASAANA: posture techniques for physical and mental balance (what many people think of as yoga)

#4: PRANAYAMA: breathing exercises for physical and mental balance

#5: PRATIHARA: a mental relaxation technique for mental balance and calm

#6: DHARANA: concentration techniques for mental balance & calm

#7: DHYANA: meditation techniques for mental balance as well as clam

#8: SAMADHI: the ultimate advanced meditation techniques & psychic procedures acquired after regular practice for universal awareness.

The process involves the awakening of the Kundalini Shakti, or the power of the serpent, which is believed to be located at the base of the human spine. As one practice the various techniques, this power/latent energy rises during a series of centers or Chakras associated with various endocrine glands. When this power reaches the highest center, which is linked with the hypothalamus gland regulating the secretion of hormonal of the endocrine system, it controls over the hypothalamus results. In this way, the secretion of hormones from different endocrine glands can be regulated. This mechanism could explain the importance of yoga as a stress management system.
